An East Bay Maternity Session in the Flower Fields: Big Sisters Meet Their Baby Brother

Maternity

Third pregnancies are different. There’s a knowing to them. A confidence and ease that comes from having done this before. And then sometimes there’s a plot twist that makes everything feel brand new again.

This was her third baby. Her first boy. And his two big sisters had a lot of feelings about it, all of them wonderful.

The Session: Pink Flower Fields at Golden Hour

There are a handful of locations in the East Bay that stop me every time I visit them. This flower field at golden hour is one of them. The pink blooms, the warm late afternoon light, the open sky. It creates a backdrop that feels almost impossibly beautiful and photographs in a way that very few locations can match.

For a maternity session it was perfect. Flowy dresses, soft golden light, fields of color in every direction.

Two Big Sisters and Their Baby Brother

The girls were not subtle about their excitement. They were playful, giggly, and completely lit up by the idea of a baby brother coming. Watching them with their mama, hands on the bump, doing what little girls do when they’re in a flower field at golden hour, was genuinely one of the most joyful sessions I’ve photographed this year.

Third-time mamas tend to be the most relaxed in front of a camera. She’d done this before. She knew what was coming. And somehow that ease, combined with her daughters’ uninhibited joy, created a session full of exactly the kind of images that age beautifully: real, warm, and completely true to who this family is right now.

From Maternity to Newborn: Documenting Both Sides of the Season

A few weeks after this session I came back to photograph the newest member of this family, baby brother, finally arrived. The newborn session took place at a quiet East Bay garden I love for outdoor newborn sessions, a tucked-away location with beautiful light and the kind of stillness that a days-old baby deserves.

I included a few select images from the newborn session here because they complete the story. Maternity to newborn. The anticipation and then the arrival. See what a full Bump to Baby experience looks like, start to finish.

Kind Words From This East Bay Family

“Rebecca was an incredible photographer for our maternity photo shoot. Before the photo shoot she was easy to communicate with and helped me prepare. During the shoot, she immediately made both my children and me feel comfortable and at ease throughout the session. Rebecca connected so naturally with my kids, which helped capture some truly beautiful and genuine moments. The photos turned out absolutely stunning and perfectly captured such a special time in our lives.”

East Bay Maternity Photography: Why This Region Has Some of My Favorite Locations

The East Bay is genuinely one of the most beautiful and varied regions in the Bay Area for maternity photography. Rolling hills, flower fields, redwood groves, quiet gardens: the range of settings available within a short drive is extraordinary. Old Borges Ranch in Walnut Creek is one of my favorites for that golden, rolling-hills look. See more of my favorite spots across the whole region in my Bay Area photography locations guide.

For golden hour maternity sessions specifically, the East Bay light in late afternoon has a warmth and quality that I find endlessly beautiful. The hills catch it differently than the coast does. More golden, more open, more expansive.
