In-home newborn photography: what to expect (Bay Area guide)

Newborn

What is an in-home newborn session?

In-home newborn photography sessions may be my favorite photography experience as a family photographer. There is something uniquely special about this season of life. Everything is new, everything feels delicate, and days are both beautiful and chaotic all at once.

In-home newborn photography is one of the most relaxed and meaningful ways to document your baby’s early days. Instead of packing up and heading to a studio, everything happens in the comfort of your own space — which can make a huge difference, especially in those first few weeks.

They create space to slow down, to cuddle your baby, to simply be together in the place where real life is unfolding. There’s no pressure to leave the house or have everything feel polished. Your home already holds the story. These sessions document your family, just as you are in this moment, right in your new baby’s first home.

When to take newborn photos (and flexible timing)

The best news about lifestyle in home newborn photos? Timing is flexible! You can schedule this session early, right at the commonly recommended 1-2 week old mark, and not leave your house for the photos. Or, you can schedule the session a bit later if you feel you need more time and rest. Every family is different, and no family regrets capturing photos of their new little one.

What to expect during your session

These sessions aren’t about perfection — they’re about remembering. Remembering how small your baby was. How your arms learned their weight. How much love filled an ordinary afternoon. How time seemed to move so slow, but also incredibly fast. When you look back on these images years from now, they’ll remind you not just of how things looked, but of how this season felt — a fleeting, powerful moment of becoming.

Newborn sessions are slow and baby-led, which means we follow your baby’s needs the entire time—feeding, soothing, cuddling, and pausing whenever needed. You can simply show up and be together. I’ll guide everything else.

How to prepare your home (it’s easier than you think)

Your home doesn’t need to be perfectly clean or organized. We’ll simply look for a few neutral spaces with good natural light, and be sure those areas are clear of items you don’t want in the photos. When I arrive, I’ll help you choose the best spots for your photos and guide you through everything. Because newborn sessions are often booked during pregnancy, you’re also welcome to send photos ahead of time so we can plan for lighting and timing. I’ll walk you through the entire process — it will be easier than you think!

What to wear for in-home newborn photos

Wardrobe greatly impacts the results of your images. Colors cast onto baby’s skin quite easily, so I highly recommend neutral and / or muted (pastel) colors specifically for newborn sessions. I guide all my families thru styling, and share examples of coordinated (opposed to matching) family outfits.

Including siblings (and pets)

I have two young daughters myself (and a dog!), and I vividly remember bringing each of them home from the hospital. It’s wild to look back now and realize just how different those two experiences were — not just because each baby was different (and they are!), but because we were different. So much growth had already happened between those moments.

Siblings and pets will likely come in and out of our session, as their own attention span allows. That’s ok! The beauty of in home newborn sessions is that they are in the comfort of their own home. There isn’t the added stress of being somewhere new, and there isn’t the added pressure to pack entertainment items for your older child(ren). I’ve worked with families in every stage—first-time parents, growing families, and everything in between—so whatever this season looks like for you, you’re in good hands.

The images shared here are from a recent in-home newborn photography session — a quiet morning filled with window light, slow moments, and parents learning the rhythm of their growing family.
