The Traditional Newborn Photos Timeline
If you’ve ever Googled “when to take newborn photos,” you’ll quickly see the most common answer: when baby is 1–2 weeks old.
My website even says a version of this! And yes — there is a reason. In those early weeks, babies are sleepiest. It’s typically before baby acne appears and / or cluster feeding begins. This stage is undeniably beautiful.
It can also be incredibly tender and overwhelming. Moms are healing from delivery. Both parents are adjusting to a routine that doesn’t yet feel like a routine. Whether this is your first baby or you’ve done this before, every transition a new child brings its own physical and emotional intensity.
If you couldn’t commit to photos that early, you did not miss your chance. You were doing exactly what you needed to be doing.

Why I Personally Love 2–3 Month Newborn Photo Sessions
When babies are 2–3 months old, everything begins to shift in the sweetest way. Babies are more alert. They make eye contact. They stay awake for more — sometimes even all — of the session. We start to see glimpses of personality, and it’s often when those first real smiles appear.
At this age, babies are often a bit fuller — rounder cheeks, soft little rolls, longer stretches. They’re still tiny, but they are starting to feel more like themselves.
And something else shifts too: parents. By this point, most families are getting a little more rest. There’s a rhythm forming. Parents feel more confident. Moms may even begin to feel a bit more like themselves again. All of that creates space for a more relaxed, connected session.
Instead of focusing only on how tiny they were (which they absolutely still are), we also get to document who they are becoming.

If You’re Worried You “Missed It”
You have been loving and focusing on your brand new baby. That is exactly what you were supposed to do. You have been healing. Learning. Adjusting.
As a San Francisco Bay Area newborn photographer, I am fortunate to work with families whose babies are 2 weeks, 2 months, and even 10 months old. And every single one of them is grateful to have these memories preserved.
Babies are beautiful and fleeting at every stage. There is no expiration date on documenting this season.
If your baby is a little older and you’re wondering if it’s too late — it isn’t. I would love to create something meaningful for your family, exactly as you are right now.

Resources for the Early Postpartum Period
The first weeks home with a new baby are beautiful and hard in equal measure, and having the right support around you makes an enormous difference. A few things I genuinely recommend from personal experience:
Lactation support
UCSF offers free weekly MILK classes open to all Bay Area families, where you can connect with a lactation consultant and other new parents. No appointment needed and no cost. If you’re not near UCSF, your hospital’s postpartum floor can usually connect you with a lactation consultant before you even leave.
Postpartum therapy
I cannot recommend this enough. The postpartum period is a uniquely significant time in your life, and seeing a therapist who works specifically with new mothers — someone who talks to people like you all day, every day — is a completely different experience from general therapy. UCSF has a dedicated early postpartum program available to mothers whose babies are under six months old. If you’re not a UCSF patient, ask your OB for a referral to a postpartum therapist within your provider network. Most OBs have someone they trust and recommend regularly.
Prenatal and postnatal yoga
Jane Austin offers classes in the Bay Area specifically designed for pregnancy and the postpartum period, including mama and baby classes that give you somewhere to be, something to do, and a room full of people in the same season of life. I also share tips on how to meet other moms in the Bay Area that were meaningful for me.
