Bay Area Maternity Photography — The Complete Guide to Timing, What to Expect & Favorite Locations

Maternity

Pregnancy is beautiful — but it’s also a lot. You’re growing a human, carrying a mental checklist that never ends, and trying to stay present in a season that moves faster than you expect. Maternity photos are one of the few things on that list that are entirely for you — a chance to pause, be present, and document this season before it becomes a memory.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a maternity session but aren’t sure where to start, this guide covers everything. When to book, when to shoot, what to wear, where to go in the Bay Area, and how to make the most of your session. From an Alameda-based Bay Area maternity photographer and mama of two who has lived this season twice — and photographed it many times over.

When to Book Your Bay Area Maternity Session

Book early — ideally in your second trimester, around weeks 20 to 24. Maternity sessions are one of those things that feel far away and then suddenly aren’t. Popular time slots — especially golden hour sessions in spring and fall — fill up quickly, and you don’t want to be scrambling to find availability at 32 weeks.

Booking early also gives you time to think about locations, outfits, and what you want the session to feel like without any pressure. It becomes something to look forward to rather than something to check off a list at the last minute.

If you’re also planning a newborn session, consider booking a Bump to Baby package at the same time — one maternity session and one in-home newborn session, documenting both sides of this season as a paired set. Bump to Baby packages book even faster than individual sessions, so early planning matters even more.

The Best Time to Actually Take Your Maternity Photos

The sweet spot for maternity photography is between weeks 28 and 34. Here’s why that window works so well:

By week 28 your bump is beautifully present and fully visible — there’s no ambiguity, no wondering whether it reads as a pregnancy in photos. You look and feel unmistakably pregnant in the most beautiful way.

By week 34 you still have enough energy and comfort to move through a session without it feeling like a physical challenge. Pregnancy is a lot on your body, especially toward the end, and the last few weeks are often better spent resting and nesting than standing in a field at golden hour — as beautiful as that sounds.

If you go past week 34 it’s absolutely not too late — just get in touch and we’ll work with your timing. But if you’re planning ahead, aim for that 28 to 34 week window for the best experience and the most comfortable session.

What to Expect During Your Bay Area Maternity Session

Maternity sessions run around an hour and typically take place at golden hour — that last hour or two before sunset when the light is at its softest and most flattering.

The sessions are relaxed, lightly guided, and easy to move through. If this is your first baby, this may all feel completely new — and that’s entirely normal. There’s no pressure to perform or know what to do. I’ll guide you in a way that feels natural, so you can focus on being present instead of thinking about the camera. Everything is designed to feel effortless for you.

My approach to maternity photography is the same as everything else I shoot — connection over performance, real moments over manufactured ones. We’ll keep things simple and natural, focused on this season of anticipation and the quiet moments before everything changes. These images are about remembering what this time felt like — not just what you looked like.

If your partner is joining the session, I’ll guide them too. Some of my favorite maternity images are the ones that capture the two of you together — the anticipation, the tenderness, the quiet moment before your family of two becomes something else entirely.

Sessions happen at golden hour and that light moves fast. I’ll give you a specific arrival time and ask that you stick to it — we want every minute of that light. Put your phone away, let yourself actually be there, and trust me to handle the rest.

Maternity Sessions with Children

If you already have little ones at home, bringing them to your maternity session is something I love and actively encourage. These sessions have a completely different energy — a beautiful blend of the joyful chaos of a family session and the quieter, more tender moments of a traditional maternity shoot. We’ll capture your kids interacting with your bump, the excitement and curiosity of a big brother or sister in the making, and all the beautiful mess that comes with young children being fully themselves.

And then we’ll carve out time for just you, just you and your partner, and the quieter moments that are equally worth documenting. The result is a session that tells the full story of where your family is right now — on the edge of everything changing, together.

What to Wear for Your Bay Area Maternity Session

Outfit planning for a maternity session doesn’t need to be stressful. The short version: flowy dresses in neutral or muted tones almost always photograph beautifully. Worth Collective makes dresses specifically designed for maternity photography, and empire waist styles from Anthropologie and Free People are also wonderful options.

A few general rules that hold across almost every location and season: avoid very bright colors and busy patterns, which tend to draw the eye away from your face and your bump. Soft neutrals — cream, sage, terracotta, dusty rose, muted navy — work beautifully in almost every setting. Fabrics with movement photograph particularly well outdoors, especially in coastal locations where there’s a natural breeze.

The Best Bay Area Locations for Maternity Sessions

The Bay Area has some of the most beautiful settings in the world for maternity photography — and the right location can completely transform the mood and feel of your images. Here are a few favorites across the region:

Filoli, Woodside

Filoli is one of my absolute favorite locations for maternity sessions — and one of my favorite places in the Bay Area full stop. The formal gardens, the flowering paths, the sense of lush abundance — it creates images that feel romantic, timeless, and completely unlike anything else. Spring at Filoli during cherry blossom and tulip season is particularly extraordinary — if that timing works with your due date it’s worth planning around. The magnolia season in late winter is equally stunning and often overlooked. You can read more about Filoli sessions on my Filoli photography page.

Filoli in Bloom — A Note on Seasonal Planning

If you’re dreaming of a Filoli maternity session during cherry blossom or tulip season, plan your due date backwards from February through April and book as early as possible. These are the most in-demand dates of the year and they go fast. Magnolia season (late January through February) is a beautiful and slightly less competitive alternative that produces equally stunning images.

Baker Beach, San Francisco

For a San Francisco maternity session with an iconic backdrop, Baker Beach is hard to beat. The Golden Gate Bridge framing, the soft coastal light, and the dramatic sweep of the shoreline create images that feel genuinely breathtaking. Late afternoon light here is extraordinary almost year-round — with the exception of those days when Karl rolls in early. For expecting mamas who want something unmistakably San Francisco, this is the session.

Rodeo Beach, Marin

For something dramatic and cinematic, Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands is extraordinary for maternity photography. The dark volcanic sand, the rugged coastal cliffs, the wild energy of the Pacific — it creates images that feel genuinely breathtaking. The drama of the landscape mirrors the magnitude of this season in a way that I find endlessly moving. Windswept and wild in the best possible way.

Half Moon Bay

The beaches near Half Moon Bay bring a wild, romantic coastal feel that is particularly stunning for maternity sessions. The dramatic cliffs, the open Pacific horizon, and the golden coastal grasses create a backdrop that feels almost otherworldly. Half Moon Bay is one of my personal favorites for maternity — there’s something about that stretch of coastline that is completely singular.

Lafayette & the East Bay Hills

For East Bay families, the rolling hills above Lafayette offer some of the most beautiful golden-hour light in the entire region — warm, open, and with that particular quality you only get when the afternoon sun is low and the California grass is catching it. Best in spring when the hills are green and in fall when they turn golden. The Lafayette area also has beautiful reservoir and parkland settings for families who want something more intimate and tree-lined.

Oakland — Rose Garden & the Hills

For East Bay mamas who want something lush and colorful, the Oakland Rose Garden during bloom season is one of the most beautiful maternity locations in the region. The terraced hillside, the sweeping bay views in the background, and the warmth of the late afternoon light through the roses create something genuinely extraordinary. Best in late spring and early summer when the roses are in full bloom.

Alternatively, the redwoods in the hills offer a stunning natural backdrop that is easy to access and hard to beat. This location is particularly a good fit if you are looking for a maternity session with a young child because it offers more timing flexibility beyond the typical outdoor golden hour. For East Bay mamas looking for something lush and close to home, Oakland genuinely delivers.

Alameda Beach & the East Bay

For a more relaxed, sun-drenched maternity session, Alameda Beach offers beautiful open light and a California coastal feel without the crowds of more well-known Bay Area beaches. As my home location, this is one I know intimately — and it photographs beautifully, especially at golden hour when the light turns warm and golden across the water.

Not Sure Where to Shoot?

That’s genuinely part of what I help with when you book. I’ll ask about your vision, your due date, the time of year, and what kind of mood you want the images to have — and then we’ll find the right location together. Some of my favorite sessions have happened at locations clients had never considered before we talked.

Solo Sessions, Partner Sessions, and Everything In Between

Some mamas prefer solo sessions — there is something quietly powerful about being photographed alone in this season, just you and your bump and the landscape. Others want their partner front and center, and those images of two people on the edge of becoming three (or four, or five) are some of the most moving I make. Both are completely valid and both make for beautiful, meaningful images.

Second and third time mamas — this is for you too. Maternity photos aren’t just for first pregnancies. Every baby deserves to be documented before they arrive, and every pregnancy is its own distinct season. If anything, second and third time mamas often feel more relaxed and more themselves in front of the camera — and that shows up beautifully in photos.

The Bump to Baby Experience

If you’re already thinking about newborn photos, consider combining your maternity and newborn sessions into a Bump to Baby experience. One maternity session at a beautiful Bay Area location, followed by a relaxed in-home newborn session in the first few weeks after birth — documenting both sides of this season as a paired set of images that tell the full story.

Bump to Baby packages are my most meaningful offering and they book significantly in advance. If this appeals to you, reach out when you book your maternity session and we’ll secure both dates at the same time.

Supporting Your Body During Pregnancy — A Few Resources I Recommend

A maternity session documents this season beautifully — and so does taking good care of your body throughout it. A few resources I genuinely recommend to every expecting Bay Area mama:

Book your pelvic floor PT now, before you think you need it. Waitlists at the best Bay Area practices are long and the benefits during pregnancy and postpartum are real. Level Up PT and Bay Vista PT are both deeply loved by the Bay Area mama community. If you’re in San Francisco, Leah at UCSF is exceptional. For prenatal massage, Amy Gerard in Alameda has a thoughtfully designed setup that supports pregnant and postpartum bodies comfortably at every stage — she is genuinely wonderful. For movement and community, Jane Austin offers prenatal and mama-and-baby yoga classes in the Bay Area that are worth knowing about from early in your pregnancy. More details and links for all of these are in my Walnut Creek maternity session post.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bay Area Maternity Photography

How far in advance should I book a Bay Area maternity photographer?

Ideally during your second trimester — around weeks 20 to 24. This gives you the best chance of securing your preferred location, timing, and season. Golden hour sessions in spring and fall fill fastest. If you’re already past 24 weeks, reach out anyway — I keep a waitlist and can often accommodate later bookings.

What is the best week for maternity photos?

Between weeks 28 and 34 is the sweet spot. Your bump is beautifully visible and you still have the energy and comfort to move through a session with ease. If you’re past 34 weeks, it’s not too late — just get in touch and we’ll work with your timing.

Can I bring my toddler or other children to my maternity session?

Absolutely — and I actively encourage it. Sessions with older siblings have a completely different and beautiful energy. We’ll capture the whole family together, your children with your bump, and then carve out quieter time for just you and your partner. Read more about what to expect from a maternity session with a toddler.

What Bay Area locations do you photograph maternity sessions at?

Throughout the Bay Area — Filoli in Woodside, Baker Beach and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, Rodeo Beach in Marin, the redwoods in Oakland, Alameda Beach, and many other locations depending on the season and your vision. I’ll help you choose the right spot.

Do you offer both maternity and newborn photography?

Yes — and combining them into a Bump to Baby package is one of my most meaningful offerings. One maternity session and one in-home newborn session, documenting both sides of this season as a paired set. Reach out when you book to add this on.

Do you travel outside the Bay Area for maternity sessions?

Get in touch and we’ll talk through what’s possible. Travel fees apply for locations beyond my standard service area.

Is it worth doing maternity photos for a second or third pregnancy?

Completely and without reservation. Every pregnancy is its own season and every baby deserves to be documented before they arrive. Second and third time mamas are often the most relaxed and most themselves in front of the camera — and that ease creates some of the most beautiful images I make.
