The Best Bay Area Beaches for Family and Maternity Photography

Family

Our car is constantly full of sand. That should tell you everything.

I grew up by the ocean and my girls have inherited every bit of that love. We go often — even on the colder days — just to play in the sand, chase seagulls, and explore. The beach has always been a happy place for our family and it shows up in every session I shoot there.

After countless hours spent on Bay Area beaches — both as a photographer and as a mom who just loves the coast — I have strong opinions about which beaches work best, when to go, and how to make the most of your session. Here’s some of what I know.

Why the Beach Works So Well for Photos

The beach is one of the few places where everything just falls into place — and it works beautifully for both family sessions and maternity photography, just in completely different ways.

For families, the beach does something to kids that no amount of directing or posing can manufacture. The moment their feet hit the sand they stop thinking about the camera entirely. They run toward the water, dig, splash, chase seagulls, and just exist in the joy of it. That energy is exactly what I’m there to capture and it makes my job feel almost effortless. Read here for more tips on surviving photography sessions with children.

For expecting mamas, the coast offers something completely different — the open sky, the vastness of the water, the golden light bouncing off the surface. There’s a sense of magnitude to a beach maternity session that mirrors the weight and beauty of this season of life in a way that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.

And the light. Bay Area beaches are famous for their soft, diffused light — even on overcast days the coastal light is a photographer’s dream. No harsh midday shadows, no blown out skies. Just clean, even, beautiful light that works at almost any time of day and in any season.

What to Bring to a Bay Area Beach Session

A few things that make a real difference:

Layers for everyone.

Bay Area beach evenings can turn cool quickly — especially at spots like Rodeo Beach where the Marin headlands wind picks up as the sun drops. A light jacket or wrap for after the session means nobody’s shivering through the last twenty minutes. For babies and toddlers, an extra layer is non-negotiable.

Non-messy snacks.

Something they love that won’t end up on their outfit before we’ve taken a single photo. Pouches, crackers, fruit. A mid-session snack break can completely reset the energy of an afternoon and gives you a natural moment of connection before we move into the next section.

A change of clothes for the kids.

Sand finds its way everywhere, and children who are told not to touch the water will touch the water. A backup outfit means nobody has to stress about it and everyone can just enjoy the session.

Something to carry your toddler.

Not all Bay Area beach paths are stroller-friendly — Rodeo Beach in particular involves some uneven terrain getting down to the sand. A carrier or the ability to carry your little one a short distance makes arrival much smoother.

Leave the hats at home

Or bring them just for the walk down, then tuck them away. Hat brims create shadows that are genuinely difficult to photograph through, and the Bay Area beach light is usually soft enough in the evening that you don’t need them for sun protection during a session.

The Best Bay Area Beaches for Photography Sessions

Alameda Beach

This is my home beach so naturally one of my favorites for family sessions. What makes Alameda Beach special is what it doesn’t have — crowds. While other Bay Area beaches get busy on weekends, Alameda Beach stays remarkably accessible and peaceful. Parking is easy, the beach is wide and open, and the views across the Bay are stunning in the late afternoon light. If you’re an East Bay family looking for a beautiful beach session without the drive, this is your spot.

Best for: Families with young kids, East Bay clients, anyone who wants a relaxed low-logistics beach experience

Baker Beach, San Francisco

Baker Beach needs no introduction — the Golden Gate Bridge backdrop makes it one of the most iconic photography locations in the Bay Area. The dramatic combination of golden sand, crashing waves, and that unmistakable bridge in the distance creates images that feel both timeless and completely specific to this place and this time in your life.

Baker Beach works beautifully for both family sessions and maternity photography. For families, the open stretch of sand gives kids room to run freely. For maternity, the sweeping views create something genuinely cinematic. The light here in the late afternoon is extraordinary.

Rodeo Beach, Marin

Rodeo Beach is my most dramatic location and one of my personal favorites. The dark sand, the rugged cliffs, the wild coastal energy — it feels unlike any other beach in the Bay Area and it photographs in a completely unique way. Moody, cinematic, and breathtaking.

For maternity sessions especially, Rodeo Beach is extraordinary. The drama of the landscape mirrors the magnitude of expecting a new life in a way that I find endlessly moving. For family sessions it works beautifully too — kids love the rock pools, the waves, and the sense of adventure that comes with a wilder beach.

Rodeo Beach sits within the Marin Headlands and the surrounding landscape — wetlands, open headlands, and forested trails — adds even more variety to what’s available within just a few minutes of the parking area.

Best for: Maternity, adventurous families, dramatic moody aesthetic

Half Moon Bay Beaches

The beaches near Half Moon Bay are beautiful — and they’re more accessible from the Peninsula and South Bay than most people realize. The dramatic cliffs, the open Pacific horizon, and the golden coastal grasses create a backdrop that feels genuinely unlike anywhere else. There’s a wild, romantic coastal feel here that photographs beautifully and feels worlds away from the city.

Half Moon Bay is a particularly stunning location for maternity photography — the sense of open space and natural drama creates images that feel almost otherworldly. For families, the wide open beaches and rugged coastal trails give kids room to roam and explore freely.

Best for: Maternity, families who want something dramatic and different, Peninsula clients

Hidden Gems & Off the Beaten Path

Not every great Bay Area beach makes the tourist guides — and some of my favorite session locations are the quieter, lesser-known spots that offer beautiful light and far fewer crowds. If you’re looking for something a little different, I’d love to chat about what might work for your family. Just ask.

Practical Tips for Your Beach Session

Go at golden hour

Beach sessions work best in the last hour or two before sunset. The light is softer, warmer, and more flattering than midday sun — and the crowds thin out significantly. I schedule all beach sessions in the late afternoon / evening for exactly this reason.

Dress for the environment

The Bay Area coast is almost always cooler than you expect — even in summer. Bring a light layer for everyone, especially kids. A child who is cold and uncomfortable is a child who is not having fun, and that shows up in photos. Flowy fabrics photograph beautifully at the beach and move well in the coastal breeze.

Embrace the wind and the mess

Wind-blown hair is not a problem — it’s a feature. Some of the most beautiful beach portraits happen when everyone stops trying to look perfect and just lets the environment do its thing. Sand in the hair, rosy cheeks from the breeze, bare feet in the water — lean into all of it.

Don’t stress about the fog

Bay Area fog is mostly a photographer’s secret weapon. Overcast coastal light is soft, even, and incredibly flattering — it eliminates harsh shadows and creates a mood that clear sunny days simply can’t replicate. Some of my most beautiful beach sessions have happened on grey overcast days. Don’t reschedule because of fog — embrace it.

Arrive a little early

Give yourself time to find parking, get everyone out of the car, and let the kids burn off some initial energy before we start shooting. A toddler who has had five minutes to run around and acclimate to the beach is a completely different child than one who was just buckled in a car seat. Early arrival changes everything.
