Presidio Maternity Photographer — A Morning Session at Woodline and Lover’s Lane

Maternity

As a Presidio maternity photographer, I love introducing families to the quiet beauty of Woodline and Lover’s Lane. This San Francisco maternity session took place at 37 weeks pregnant with an energetic three-year-old, a little rain, and so much love between this growing family.

Richa reached out hoping someone could fit in a maternity session before her second son arrived. Just a few days later, we met in San Francisco’s Presidio with her husband and energetic three-year-old for a quiet morning at Woodline and Lover’s Lane.

There was a little rain. A toddler with endless energy. A mama who told me she didn’t usually feel comfortable in front of the camera. None of it needed to be perfect. In fact, that’s exactly what made this one of my favorite San Francisco maternity photography sessions to date.

A Last-Minute Maternity Session in the Presidio

When Richa first reached out, she honestly wasn’t sure anyone would have availability before her due date. Fortunately, our schedules aligned, and within a few days we were walking beneath the eucalyptus trees at Woodline.

What struck me most about the morning wasn’t the light or even the location. It was how easy they were together. They laughed often, let their son explore at his own pace, and never seemed concerned about creating the “perfect” photo. They simply enjoyed being together, and I think that’s exactly why these images feel the way they do.

After the session, Richa sent me this message: “Thank you for this—it feels like you truly captured us, and at a time that has been so hectic and stressful.” Then, after sharing the gallery with their parents: “We got to look through the photos for a second time with our parents and loved going through them all over again…”

That phrase “making us feel so at ease” is the part that stayed with me. Beautiful photographs rarely come from perfect circumstances. They come from feeling comfortable enough to simply be together.

Why the Presidio Is One of My Favorite Places to Photograph Maternity Sessions

As a Presidio maternity photographer, Woodline and Lover’s Lane are among my favorite locations in San Francisco. Hidden within the Presidio, the tree-lined paths create soft, filtered light that feels completely different from the beaches or city overlooks many people associate with San Francisco.

Morning is my favorite time to photograph here. Unlike a dense redwood forest, the eucalyptus canopy allows more direct sunlight to reach the trails, so the softer morning light creates a luminous, peaceful atmosphere that’s ideal for maternity photography. The winding path also encourage movement. Rather than standing in one place, families naturally walk, explore, and interact—which almost always leads to photographs that feel genuine instead of posed.

One practical note: parking in the Presidio can be challenging, particularly on weekends, so I always recommend arriving a little early.

Toddlers Don’t Need to Perform

One of my favorite parts of this session was watching their three-year-old simply be himself. He balanced on wooden beams, collected sticks, climbed logs, rode on Dad’s shoulders, and laughed as we wandered through the trees. Nothing about him was carefully directed. I love that!

Parents often worry their toddler won’t cooperate during family or maternity photos. In reality, children rarely need to cooperate—they simply need space to explore. My job isn’t to make children pose. My job is to create an environment where genuine moments naturally unfold. I love the locations that allow children to just be children.

As Richa shared afterward: “She figured out creative ways to keep him engaged without forcing, and somehow managed to capture so many genuine smiles, sweet interactions, and candid moments that truly feel like us.” That is my goal!

You Don’t Have to Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

One of the first things Richa told me was that she didn’t usually like being photographed. It’s something I hear often. Pregnancy already asks so much of your body. Add a toddler, an approaching due date, and everyday life, and it’s understandable to wonder whether you’ll actually enjoy being in front of the camera.

But beautiful photographs don’t come from knowing how to pose. They come from feeling present.

Watching Richa laugh with her son, lean into her husband, and simply enjoy a quiet morning together reminded me that the most meaningful maternity photographs rarely look “perfect.” They simply feel like your family.

When she received her gallery, she wrote: “We were blown away. The images are beautiful and natural and we’ll treasure them for years.”

Why I Love Photographing Presidio Maternity Sessions in San Francisco

One of the reasons I love photographing maternity sessions in San Francisco is the variety of beautiful locations the city offers. Every location has its own personality. The quiet trails of the Presidio feel completely different from the openness of Baker Beach or the dramatic coastline overlooking the Pacific, allowing each family’s session to reflect them in a different way. Each location tells a different story.

For families looking for something peaceful, natural, and a little unexpected, Woodline and Lover’s Lane remain some of my favorite places to photograph maternity sessions.
