I had already packed up my camera, but then…Amanda was sitting in the grass with her two young daughters, four years old and not quite eighteen months. The girls were picking tiny daisy wildflowers and tucking them into their mom’s hair and shoes. Nobody asked them to. Nobody staged it. As a Golden Gate Park family photographer, this is exactly the kind of moment I hope for! Pure childhood being exactly what childhood is supposed to be. Gentle, unhurried, and completely absorbed in something small and beautiful.
That image is one of my favorites from this session. It’s so true to them. It’s also a perfect example of why, as a San Francisco family photographer, I keep coming back to this location. It gives families room to just be, which means something real can happen.

Golden Gate Park spans over 1,000 acres in the heart of San Francisco. It offers an extraordinary variety of backdrops, including mature tree canopies, open meadows, wildflower patches, water features, and pockets of soft natural light that feel completely removed from the city around them.
As a San Francisco family photographer I’ve shot there many times. It always provides such a great backdrop for family sessions. There is a variety of areas within a single location. This allows us to move around, and keeps young children engaged and gives families a range of images that feel varied all in one location.
It’s also one of the most practical San Francisco family photography locations for families with young children. Parking can be easy compared to most San Francisco locations. The dappled light throughout the park means we’re not locked into that narrow golden hour window that can be hard on families with early bedtimes. The park does half the work of keeping kids happy. There’s always something new to notice, which means less coaxing and more genuine moments.
Golden Gate Park is also home to the San Francisco Botanical Garden, another stunning photography location within the same area that I also recommend.
Amanda, Luke and Their Two Girls
Amanda and Luke arrived with their daughters on a morning that was everything I love about San Francisco in early summer. There was soft light, wildflowers in bloom, and enough open shade to give us flexibility throughout the session.
Their older daughter, a natural explorer, spent much of the session making a small bouquet of wildflowers. She was entirely content to wander and gather and investigate this new-to-her corner of the park. Their younger daughter, newly confident on her feet, had a different agenda entirely. She toddled, she ran, she sat down in the dirt with complete satisfaction and played. She found the ducks and geese nearby and was absolutely transfixed.
Amanda is a teacher, and it showed in the most beautiful way. Watching her with her girls throughout the session was one of those quiet privileges of this work. Patient, warm, completely present. Luke brought an easy relaxed energy that made the whole session feel unhurried and genuine. Together they are the kind of family where the connection between them does all the work, and my job is simply to be in the right place when it happens.
And then Amanda sat down in the grass and her daughters started putting flowers in her hair.

The open shaded areas within the park create naturally diffused light that lasts for hours throughout the afternoon. This means we’re not racing the clock to capture everything before the light disappears. For families with children who have early bedtimes, which in San Francisco summer means a sunset at nearly 8:30pm, this flexibility is genuinely transformative.

They’re timed for windows that work well for young kids, when the light is at its softest. I have favorite spots within Golden Gate Park that most people walk past without stopping. These spots that give us beautiful light, natural framing, and enough space for young children to move freely. I share these with families when we’re planning their session. Golden Gate Park is a beautiful location year round, and fall is a particularly wonderful time to shoot there. The light shifts in September and October in a lovely way for photos, and the warmer temperatures make for a more relaxed experience for everyone.
Fall is also holiday card season, which means it books faster than any other time of year. If updated family photos for your holiday cards are on your list, the window to secure a fall date is in summer. September and October dates book fast and the best slots go to families who plan ahead. I typically recommend reaching out at least two to three months ahead for fall sessions and the best weekend Golden Gate Park dates go first.
