That text made me laugh. I’m not here to tame the wild. I’m here to capture it. The laughter, the play, the chaos photographs more beautifully than any pose ever could during family sessions. As a mama of two myself, I know we are going to miss these days.
A San Jose Rose Garden Family Session — Sydney, Michael and Their Two
Sydney and Michael arrived with their two children — a four year old with very strong opinions about where she wanted to be and an eighteen month old who had recently discovered running and had absolutely no plans to stop. The four year old needed some convincing early on. Snacks helped enormously. Once she warmed up she was off — exploring, running, doing exactly what a four year old should do in a garden full of roses.
The eighteen month old required no convincing whatsoever. He ran. I ran with him. It was a workout.
Between the two of them I played games, kept everyone moving, deployed strategic snacks, and stayed in motion for the entire session. Sydney was stressed going in. She was shocked when she saw the gallery. That gap — between how chaotic (and honestly fun) a session feels from the inside and how beautiful it looks in the photos — is something I witness over and over.
Why the San Jose Rose Garden Is One of My Favorite Bay Area Photography Locations
The San Jose Municipal Rose Garden is widely considered one of the best rose gardens in America — and having photographed there many times as a San Jose Rose Garden photographer I’d say that reputation is completely earned. Nearly six acres, over 3,500 rose plants, and a stunning garden layout. It is my favorite rose garden in the Bay Area.
It’s also free to enter which makes it beloved and well visited — which is exactly why I strongly prefer weekday sessions here. Weekdays give us the space to move freely and work with the light without navigating around other visitors. Weekend sessions are possible but limiting and I won’t pretend otherwise. I cannot force couples and families sitting on blankets in the rows with the current best blooms to move for our session.
Photographing here requires some advance planning on my end before we can confirm your date. I take care of all of that for you — there’s a small added cost for the necessary permit, reflected transparently in your invoice. The practical takeaway: reach out early, especially if peak is on your list.
On timing
Peak bloom falls in May and June when the rows are full and the color is at its most extraordinary. Sessions are beautiful from April through June and into summer — the roses fade gradually rather than all at once. For the most spectacular images aim for May. For a still beautiful session with more date flexibility, April and June work wonderfully too. Some years August can even be an option, but note it will look different than peak.
Golden hour
I schedule San Jose Rose Garden sessions at golden hour when the light is softest and most flattering. The garden has a beautiful mix of shaded and open areas which gives us variety within a single session.

The San Jose Rose Garden is a dream location for maternity photography. The rows of blooming roses, the formal garden paths, flowy dresses in soft neutrals at golden hour — the images practically make themselves. There’s a lushness and romance to this garden that I find particularly moving for maternity sessions specifically.
