When to Book Bay Area Fall Family Photos — and Everything Else You Need to Know

Family

Bay Area fall family photos book faster than most families expect. By the time the leaves turn and the light gets that particular golden quality everyone loves, the best dates are already gone — claimed by families who planned ahead.

If fall family photos in the Bay Area are on your list this year — whether for holiday cards, gifts, or simply documenting this season of life — here’s what to know about timing your session and everything else you might be wondering before you reach out.

When to Book Fall Photos, The Short Answer

For Bay Area families, I recommend booking fall family photos between July and September for sessions taking place in September, October, and November. Booking early gives you the most flexibility on dates, locations, and holiday card deadlines. Last-minute openings do occasionally happen — but planning ahead means you’re choosing your session, not taking whatever’s left.

Why Bay Area Fall Family Photos Fill Up So Fast

Fall has become the busiest season for family photography for a few reasons. Many families want updated photos for holiday cards, gifts for grandparents, or annual albums — and they all want them at the same time. Add in comfortable weather, kids back in a school routine, and Bay Area locations that are genuinely stunning this time of year, and you have a season where demand consistently outpaces availability.

When to Book Your Bay Area Fall Family Photos

TLDR: Book in July or August for the best chance of securing the date, location and photographer you want to work with.

September sessions

September is one of my favorite months for fall family photos in the Bay Area. Warm weather, golden grass, beautiful evening light, and galleries delivered early enough to comfortably plan holiday cards without any last-minute stress.

October sessions

October is often what families picture when they think of fall photos. Comfortable temperatures, beautiful light, and most Bay Area outdoor locations at their seasonal best. It’s also the month that books fastest — don’t wait.

November sessions

November is wonderful for families who prefer a later session or want seasonal holiday decor in their photos. After the time change golden hour arrives much earlier, which is genuinely great for sessions with young children who can’t always make it to a late sunset. Just keep in mind that holiday card deadlines arrive quickly in November — the earlier you book, the more relaxed the whole process feels.

Don’t Wait Until You Need Holiday Cards

This is the most common timing mistake I see. Your photographer needs time to shoot, edit, and deliver your gallery — and then you need time to design and order cards. Scheduling earlier creates a much more relaxed experience for everyone and means your cards arrive before the holiday rush rather than during it.

The Best Bay Area Fall Dates Often Aren’t Peak Fall

This surprises a lot of families. Some of the most beautiful Bay Area fall family sessions happen in late September and early October — the weather is warmer, locations are less crowded, and there’s still plenty of time before the holiday season. You don’t need to wait for leaves to change color to get beautiful fall family photos. The light in late September is extraordinary on its own.

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos in the Bay Area

Fall tones — cream, camel, olive, rust, soft blue, warm neutrals — work beautifully in Bay Area light. For everything else, the complete outfit guide for Bay Area sessions covers colors, fabrics, brands, shoes, layers, and what to avoid.

Some of the Best Bay Area Locations for Fall Family Photos

Fall transforms Bay Area locations in ways that make them even more beautiful than usual — golden grass, warm afternoon light, and comfortable temperatures that make everyone more relaxed. Here are a few of my favorites this time of year:

Redwood and Eucalyptus Groves

Forested locations are a fall secret weapon, and particularly wonderful for families with young children. Because the natural canopy diffuses light throughout the afternoon, these sessions aren’t dependent on that last sliver of golden hour — which means more flexibility on timing. If your kids have an early bedtime or you just want a more relaxed start time, redwood and eucalyptus groves make that possible without sacrificing beautiful images.

Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

One of the most diverse locations in the Bay Area, right in San Francisco — lakes, ancient trees, manicured gardens, open meadows. The park’s canopy creates soft filtered light that stays beautiful throughout the afternoon, which means more timing flexibility for families with young children rather than being locked into a strict golden hour window.

Bay Area Beaches

Rodeo Beach in Marin, Alameda Beach, and Baker Beach in San Francisco all photograph beautifully in fall. Cooler temperatures mean fewer crowds, and the soft coastal light in September and October is some of the most flattering I shoot in all year. Read more about Bay Area beach sessions here.

Filoli, Woodside

Fall at Filoli brings warm golden foliage and a quieter energy than the spring bloom season. And if you’re booking a November session, Filoli begins decorating for the holidays after Halloween — making it one of the most magical and unexpected settings for late fall family photos in the Bay Area. A stunning option for families who want something lush and a little unexpected. Read more about Filoli sessions here.

Not sure which location is right for your family? That’s part of what I help with when you book — I’ll ask about your kids’ ages, your aesthetic, and what kind of session you’re hoping for, and we’ll find the right fit together. These are only a few of the many locations we are lucky to have in the Bay Area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my child doesn’t cooperate?

This is the question I hear most often — and my honest answer is that children don’t need to cooperate for beautiful photos. My sessions are built around movement, play, and connection rather than asking kids to sit still and smile on command. Some of my favorite images happen when a child is running away, mid-laugh at nothing, or completely absorbed in something on the ground. The chaos is usually where the magic is. What if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

The Bay Area gives us a lot of beautiful fall days — but occasionally weather requires a change of plans. If conditions are unsafe or would significantly impact your session, I’ll reach out at least 24 hours in advance to reschedule at no additional cost. The new date is subject to my availability, but I’ll always do my best to find something that works for your family.

Can we bring our dog?

As a dog mom myself, I would love to capture all of your family — four-legged members included. Just give me a heads up so we can choose a dog-friendly location. Bring treats and a plan for when your pup needs a break from the action, and we’ll make it work.

How long does a fall family session last?

About an hour. That’s enough time for a range of images while keeping the experience enjoyable for young children — which is the whole point.

What time of day is best for Bay Area fall family photos?

For most outdoor locations I schedule sessions in the last couple of hours before sunset when the light is soft and flattering. Redwood groves and shaded locations give us more flexibility with timing — which is one of the reasons I love them for early fall sessions when golden hour is still late.

What if we haven’t had professional photos in years?

You don’t need experience, children who pose on command, or any idea what to do with your hands. My job is to guide you through it — and create space for the genuine connection and real moments that make photos worth keeping. You just have to show up.

When will we receive our photos?

Within three weeks of your session, delivered via a private online gallery with digital downloads and optional print ordering.

Do you offer prints and albums?

Your gallery comes with the option to order prints and albums directly through a printing company I trust and love. If you prefer to download your images and print elsewhere that’s completely fine too — just know that color can vary across print shops, so ordering through the gallery is the best way to ensure your images look exactly as intended.

What If Life Feels Messy Right Now?

Book anyway. There is always a reason to wait — the toddler phase is chaotic, a child is going through something, everyone is busy, life feels imperfect. But years from now, these are often the seasons families are most grateful they documented. Your children don’t need to be perfectly cooperative. Your family doesn’t need to be perfectly coordinated. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s remembering what life felt like right now.
