It was a rainy morning in San Mateo. As a San Mateo newborn photographer, I arrived to document baby Lukas at one month old — and his big sister sang me songs from the moment I walked in. I left having witnessed a Man Yue celebration, a traditional Chinese ceremony I was honored to see.
San Mateo Newborn Session Starts With Big Sister
Before I even set up my camera, I had company.
Lukas’s four year old big sister was ready for me. While mom and baby prepared for our session she kept me entertained with songs — delivered with complete commitment and zero self consciousness. She was playful, warm, and already so clearly devoted to her baby brother and family. Watching her with her family throughout the session — the gentleness, the curiosity, the love — was one of the most beautiful parts of this morning.
Baby Lukas — San Mateo In-Home Newborn Session at One Month
At one month old Lukas was an easy subject, which is not always the case. He slept through nearly the entire session, which at one month old is both completely normal and also a genuine gift. The large windows of their San Mateo home flooded the space with soft natural light even on that grey rainy morning, the kind of light that makes everything look exactly as beautiful as it actually is.
In-home newborn sessions are my preference for exactly this reason. The light in your own home, the comfort of your own space, the quiet intimacy of those first weeks — all of it creates images that feel personal and true in a way a studio simply cannot replicate.
For Lukas and his family that intimacy took on an extra dimension as the morning unfolded.
Man Yue — A One Month Celebration
As our session wrapped, the doorbell began to ring.
Family arrived carrying red eggs. What I witnessed was a Man Yue celebration, the traditional Chinese ceremony marking a baby’s first full month of life. Known as 满月 in Mandarin, Man Yue has been observed for generations as one of the most significant milestones in a new baby’s life.
The tradition is rich with meaning. The egg — round and unbroken — represents unity, harmony, and the renewal of life. The color red symbolizes prosperity, joy, and good fortune. Historically the one month mark carried enormous significance as the moment a baby’s safe arrival could be celebrated and the mother, completing her postpartum confinement period known as zuo yue zi, could officially introduce her child to the world.
Grandparents held Lukas for the first time in photographs. Red eggs were shared. The room was full of the particular warmth that comes when generations gather around something new and precious and completely worth celebrating.
It was an honor to be there.

This session is a beautiful example of what in-home newborn photography can be when you let it unfold naturally. I came to photograph a one month old and left with images of a sibling relationship just beginning, grandparents meeting their grandchild, and a family tradition being passed down in real time.
